Patricia Lankes

Patricia Lankes, my mother, my best friend, and my greatest supporter, passed away peacefully at home in Colorado on Saturday, April 12, 2025. She was 74.

Born on March 9, 1951, in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Edward and Dorothy Lankes, Patricia lived a life full of strength, purpose, adventure, and love. She graduated from Penn State University in 1972 and later earned two Master’s degrees, driven by a deep commitment to public service. She dedicated 30 years to the Department of Veterans Affairs, inspired by the memory of her father. Her work touched countless lives, and she never stopped advocating for better care for our veterans.

But to me, she was simply Mom. The person I called every day. The one who knew what I was thinking before I said a word. The one who always believed in me, even when I doubted myself. She raised me to be independent, determined, and kind—and she always had my back. No matter what.

We moved across the country during her career, creating new homes and lasting friendships along the way. Together, we traveled the world, collecting stories, memories, and sharing amazing experiences. She later continued those travels on her own, fulfilling her goal of visiting all 50 U.S. states and six continents. But her heart always led her back to St. Maarten, her home away from home, where the sun seemed to shine a little brighter for her.

Mom loved science fiction and fantasy. Her bookshelves were filled with other worlds, and her dragon ornament collection was a playful reminder of her imagination and sense of wonder. She believed life was meant to be lived fully—and she did just that. She often said what a “great life” she’d had. And it’s true. She made the most of every chapter, every twist and turn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Dorothy. She is survived by her brothers, Michael and Kevin Sr.; by me, her daughter Erin, and my husband Alex; and by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

We will be holding a Celebration of Life on July 5th in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, with details to follow soon, including virtual options for those joining from afar. If you knew Patricia, you know she’d want it to be full of joy, good stories, laughter, and maybe a little bit of mischief. Please join us in remembering her incredible life and spirit.
