Larry Steven Slack

Larry Steven Slack, age 70, passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at his home in Littleton, CO. He was born on February 1, 1953 in Chicago, IL to Robert “Bob” and Dorothy (Schrein) Slack. He was a 1971 graduate of Menasha High School. He met his wife, June when they were 13 years old, and they were married on May 15, 1976 in Menasha, Wisconsin.

From early on, Larry was a hard worker. At a young age, he developed his love for all things green working at the old Linsdau Florists, just down the street from his childhood home. He played as hard as he worked, which on occasion led to getting himself in trouble, much to his parents’ chagrin. After high school, Larry went on to become a Merchant Mariner where he was able to travel the world and experience many unforgettable adventures. Eventually he left the sea to become a cardiac intensive care nurse, and ended his career in medical sales. Larry never lost his love for being on the water. He was an expert sailor and owned his own little sailboat. He relished sailing on Lake Michigan whenever he had the opportunity. He was a fisherman from childhood and enjoyed going fishing with friends in Canada. He loved to ski and swim. He equally loved winter sports, appreciated a good fishery on the ice of lake Winnebago as well as cross-country skiing. Larry enjoyed traveling throughout his life enjoying trips to other countries as well as visiting family and friends. Larry was a people person and was always the life of the party. Wherever he lived, everyone knew Larry Slack. He was a talented billiards, sheepshead, cribbage, and poker player and avid gardener. In retirement, he enjoyed exploring local green houses and caring for his plants. With his knack for reviving struggling houseplants, he was the plant doctor for everyone in the family. Larry was a gentle and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He and June raised their two children in Wisconsin and settled in Omaha, NE. Upon retiring, they moved with their daughter and her family to Kansas and then Colorado. Larry spent his final years surrounded by close family, spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dorothy; his brother Alan Slack; and his sister Karen Slack Frank. He is survived by his wife, June Slack (nee Talarczyk); his son Nathan Slack; his daughter Lara Slack; his son-in-law Gershom Hernandez; his treasured grandchildren, Ezra Hernandez, Samson Slack, Viola Hernandez, and Ira Hernandez; and a large extended family. In lieu of flowers, please hug your loved ones tight or brighten a stranger’s day wherever you can; all you need is love.

Larry’s family will be hosting gathering of his family and friends to remember and celebrate his life on October 21 at the Slack-Hernandez home from 11 am - 2 pm. Please feel free to stop by and share in the laughs, memories, and reminiscing. Larry would have loved a big party in his honor. Go Pack Go.
