John Fenwick

It is with great sorrow and certain surprise that we have lost John to heaven this year. He was a very bright soul who loved his family and his dog, Bear. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and gathering with his extended family when occasions arose.

John was born in Fort Collins to Richard and Betty Fenwick. He attended Cherry Creek High School, where he graduated in 1984. That same year, John joined the Navy Reserves and went through Officer’s Candidate School to become a P-3 Orion pilot. He was honorably discharged from duty in 1990. John attended Colorado State University in 1985 where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, and he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minor in Economics. He began selling life insurance and later entered the world of finance where his career grew and he eventually started his own business, Preferred Partners, a branch Broker Dealer housed with Cambridge Investment Research.

John married Kathy Grimm in 1993 and they had two children, Nick and Megan. Though their marriage ended just prior to John’s passing, the love he carried for his children and former wife persisted.

While he was active in many avenues of life, his favorite times were as a parent. John was a coach for Mullen High Junior Varsity Lacrosse for a few years while Nick and Megan attended Mullen. He also coached football in Nick’s early years. You’d never met a bigger fan of his children than John was.

His legacy at his company, Preferred Partners, will always be remembered as he worked closely with his team to build quite a tight-knit group that also resembled family. His branch loved and respected him and believed that he advocated for them, which he did with great passion.

John never forgot anything, and that means he never forgot all of his friends and family who will miss him so very much. He leaves behind a trail of laughter and great memories that will transcend time. There was always a punchline or a movie quote or a political comment to add a bit of livelihood to any conversation he engaged in. We all will remember that feeling that he brought to the room, as he filled it with his joyful presence and larger-than-life persona.

John loved “Baby Jesus”. We realize that he was spiritual in his own way, and believe that he is happily joined with his Maker.

John was preceded in death by his father, Richard. John is survived by his mother Betty Fenwick, his two children Nick and Megan, his former spouse Kathy, and his sister Kristine (Fenwick) McKay and her husband Tim McKay.

Donations may be made in his name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the USO.
