Gilberto Santana Pantoja: A Life Celebrated

The passing of Gilberto Santana Pantoja on May 22, 2025, at the age of 91, leaves a void in the hearts of countless individuals whose lives he touched with his unwavering kindness, infectious laughter, and boundless generosity. Born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, on March 18, 1934, Gilberto’s life was a testament to resilience, hard work, and the enduring power of family.

His journey began in Brooklyn, New York, where his entrepreneurial spirit blossomed with the opening of a small candy and ice cream store. This venture not only showcased his business acumen but also revealed his innate ability to bring joy to others – a characteristic that defined his entire life. It was in Brooklyn that he met the love of his life, Amelia, beginning a 65-year marriage filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures.

Relocating to Southern California, Gilberto embarked on a successful career in the automotive industry, rising from car salesman to a respected finance expert and general manager at a Ford dealership. Over three decades, he garnered numerous accolades, reflecting his unwavering dedication, integrity, and exceptional ability to connect with people. His entrepreneurial spirit continued to flourish, leading him to invest in rental properties and eventually own a successful liquor store and bar, all while consistently providing for and supporting his family.

Retirement brought no slowing down for Gilberto. He embraced simple pleasures – the warmth of the sun, leisurely strolls, and the quiet satisfaction of maintaining his beautiful home. These activities, however, paled in comparison to his greatest source of joy: his family. He cherished attending his daughters' performances at Rams and Raiders games, watching his son Junior playing all his sporting events and he wholeheartedly supported his six grandchildren in all their endeavors. Whether at sporting events, birthday parties, or simply lending a helping hand, he was always present, offering his full heart and generous spirit.

Family travel held a special place in Gilberto's heart. These trips weren't merely sightseeing excursions; they were opportunities to create lasting memories with those he loved. Returning to his native Puerto Rico to reconnect with friends and family was particularly meaningful, allowing him to share his heritage with future generations.

Beyond his love for family and travel, Gilberto possessed a deep appreciation for history and a remarkable memory. He could recall names, dates, and events with astounding accuracy, and he delighted in sharing this knowledge with others, often visiting historical sites and enriching the lives of those around him. One of his proudest achievements was a recent trip to Washington, D.C., with his son-in-law, Troy – a dream realized for a man who deeply valued the history and sacrifices that shaped America.

His dedication extended to his community, as well. When able, he actively participated in children's ministries at his daughter's church, demonstrating his selfless nature and his commitment to supporting causes close to his heart. He also found fulfillment in volunteering at Troy’s ice cream shop events serving the IDD community, deriving immense joy from helping others and, of course, indulging in a scoop (or two) of ice cream.

Gilberto Santana Pantoja’s legacy extends far beyond his achievements; it's woven into the fabric of the lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and wisdom. He is survived by his beloved wife, Amelia; his cherished children; and his six grandchildren, who were the center of his world.

A celebration of Gilberto's life will be held on June 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Journey Church, 9009 Clydesdale Rd., Castle Rock, CO 80108. All who knew and loved him are warmly invited to join in honoring a life well-lived.
