Gerard “Gary” Elsbernd

Gerard “Gary” Elsbernd, 81, long-time resident of Centennial, Colorado, peacefully passed away May 8, 2024.

Gary’s life will be celebrated this upcoming summer in Colorado with friends and family to be notified.

Gary was born in Crosby on November 27, 1942.  He was the youngest of seven children, born to Herman Elsbernd and Erna Schaffer-Elsbernd.  He graduated from Crosby High School in 1960, earned an Associates Degree at North Dakota State College of Science and spent a notable and successful career with IBM for more than 30 years.

Gary married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Bummer, on January 4, 1964, leaving the church on a snowy day in a horse-drawn sleigh.  Gary and Sandy created a life together starting in Chicago, Illinois.  They had two children together, Lynette Martinez (Elsbernd) and Wendy Murphy (Elsbernd).  The sweethearts moved from Chicago to Bettendorf, Iowa, then onto Centennial, Colorado, in 1977.  They spent many years there raising a family and enjoying all that Colorado and traveling had to offer.  Gary continued his career as a Field Engineer, Manager, and Instructor for IBM, garnering numerous awards along the way.

Gary enjoyed a good game of golf with his wife, bowling with family and league friends, and fishing with his brothers.

Gary will be missed as he was loved very much by his wife of 60 years, Sandy; his daughter, Lynette Martinez and her husband Jon; his second daughter, Wendy Murphy and her husband Derek Murphy; and his two granddaughters, Mariah Kuhr and Aleah Kuhr.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Erna Elsbernd, brothers Earl, Duane, and Paul and sister, Audrey.

The family is truly grateful for our time with Gary.  He was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, provider, friend, and mentor.
