David Alan Mack

David Alan Mack, 76, of Centennial CO, passed on Friday, October 11th, following a long illness. Dave will be well remembered for his steadfast devotion to his family, friends and Colorado Rockies baseball team.

Born in Omaha, NE, Dave attended Creighton University and later graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he was editor of the school newspaper. So began a successful career in journalism where he went on to share a Pulitzer Prize for his work on a suburban Omaha newsweekly exposing questionable fundraising and financial tactics of Boys Town, a highly regarded nonprofit located near the city.

Dave later joined Northwestern Bell in Omaha where he worked in public relations, speechwriting, and employee communications. He remained with what was then known as the Bell System for decades, serving in a variety of PR and Public Affairs positions in Omaha, Washington, DC, and Denver. After leaving "Ma Bell", he worked for several other communication and marketing companies in Denver until his retirement.

He spent his golden years cheering on the Rockies, Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, and Creighton Blue Jays basketball team.

He also managed to assemble an enormous collection of folk music records and CDs while attending music festivals throughout the state. His growing circle of family and friends would eagerly await each Christmas season for updates from Dave, which were not the standard “What a year this has been” mass produced letters many people send as holiday greetings. Instead, Dave would share meticulously compiled CD collections of the folk music that had brought him the most happiness the previous year. It was his special way of sharing his joy with others.

Dave's razor-sharp sense of humor, accompanied by a healthy dose of sarcasm, would often send new acquaintances reeling. But a friendly lunch would cement lasting friendships, especially if Dave never had to pick up the check.

Dave is survived by son Zachary and his wife Lindsey and their daughters Evelyn and Cassidy; and sons Andrew and Joshua; as well as Dave's longtime companion, Cris Hansberry and her son Trevor, daughter Lindsay, son-in-law David Kerr, and their children, Avett and Harriet.

Dave’s family plans to hold a special remembrance for him next year on a date yet to be determined during the Rockies’ season. Hopefully they will be enjoying the second coming of “Rocktober” and we’ll have even more reason to celebrate.

In the meantime, enjoy your many happy memories of Dave Mack and be prepared to share them when we get together.

Please reach out to the family next spring to find out the details.
