October 18, 1919 - September 21, 2020
Mary Alice Montgomery Cooprider died peacefully on September 21, 2020 in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. She was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, on October 18, 1919, to Sarah Edna Fadler Montgomery and Charles Ray Montgomery. A life-long proponent of education and learning, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State Teacher’s College, Pittsburg, Kansas. She taught English, was a member of the Amherst, New York School Board, and a long time member of P.E.O. At her Wind Crest community she founded and led the Wind Crest Writers for over ten years. Her son, Charles remembers as a child that she was always correcting his grammar. “When you go to bed you lie down, not lay down. You lay a book on the table.” For that constant instruction he is eternally grateful. Mary and her husband, Virgil, loved to travel. They kept a big world map on the wall and would add a push pin to each new location visited in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and Africa. They instilled that love of travel and adventure into each of their children. During family vacations in the 1950’s, they drove the six family members in a car without air conditioning to visit relatives, to the beach in Galveston, Texas, and Estes Park , Colorado and its crisp mountain air. Virgil Wayne Cooprider, her husband of over 63 years, and her daughter-in-law, Sheila (Charles) preceded her in death. They are survived by four children, Charles, Eugene (Camille), Mary Chandler (Harry), and Kathy Smith (Dail), nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. A private ceremony for immediate family will be held, and interment will be at St. Andrew United Methodist Church Columbarium, Highlands Ranch, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to P.E.O. International Scholarships, St. Andrew UMC, Highlands Ranch Colorado, or your local hospice organization.
